The Practice Nurse Incentive Program (PNIP)

The PNIP program comences in January 2012 and includes incentives for eligible general practices to employ nurses to assist in the delivery of essential primary health care services in the community. Grandparenting arrangements will be in place for the first three years of the program to ensure practices are not financially disadvantaged.  APNA, AGPN and other professional bodies are developing resources including DVDs, business models, online education and training, webinars, and fact sheets.

From January 2012, funding to assist in the employment of nurses will become available to all accredited general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.

This change will enable:

  • increased flexibility of the practice team;
  • greater recognition of the practice nurse role;
  • increased care coordination;
  • greater contribution to long term health of the population;
  • improved quality and safety in practices;
  • expanded and enhanced practice nurse roles;
  • increased access to care for patients; and
  • improved safety and quality in practices.

The following resources have been developed to assist practices take advantage of the opportunities that the Practice Nurse Incentive Program creates for practices.
